Story of the Greys and The Onyx City (DM)

While the Greys had the technology to travel through space, travel beyond the speed of light was elusive without dangerous rituals to secure the aid of Old Ones to bend space and time.  To that end, they looked for other methods to travel to other worlds and that’s when they discovered the Skein.

After some time exploring and about 50,000 years ago, the Greys happened upon a breach in reality in an underground cavern on Thule.  Upon emerging above the ground they found a dim icy landscape that felt like home.  Haste was made to set up a foothold on our world, and The Onyx City was created, home for thousands of Greys and their creations to study our world and what it has to offer.  The Greys took captives and modified them to do much of the physical work in The Onyx City.

Nonetheless, for some things they were still dependent on the Grey homeworld.  This wasn’t much of a problem because the Greys used their magitech to stabilize the pathways of the Skein so regular shipments and travel between Thule and their homeworld was possible, but the stabilizing some of the pathways in Chaos of the Skein drew the attention of the Skein-Mother.  She did… something… to make their ability to control the shifts in the Skein became less effective, and in time it became nonexistent.  Eventually, The Onyx City was cut off from the Grey homeworld.

The Greys on Thule, not having a ship capable of making the long journey home, turned on the transmitter to summon any passing Grey ships but no one came.  The servants of the Greys rebelled and won their freedom, taking some technologies and secrets of magic with them; they became the early Hyperboreans.  The remaining Greys, unable to sustain or care for themselves, descended into chaos and perished.  Memory of them faded from history, but evidence of them did not for The Onyx City remains, despite being slowly decimated by a glacier coming down from the mountains.  It is overrun by beasts, the evolving failed experiments of the Greys, creatures from beyond that answered the call of the transmitter and creatures that have wandered in through the Skein.
