The Shield Maiden is a formidable warrior, known for her courage, martial prowess, and unwavering loyalty.  More than just a fighter, she is a bulwark against danger, a protector of her allies, and an inspiring presence on the battlefield.  Her strength lies not only in her weapon arm but also in her steadfast resolve and ability to inspire those who fight by her side.

Shield Maidens are revered figures in their society, often seen as symbols of courage and resilience.  They are fiercely loyal to their comrades, their cause, and their chosen leaders.  While capable of great offense, they often prioritize protecting those around them.  Their leadership style is typically direct and inspiring, leading by example in the thick of battle.  A Shield Maiden’s personal honor and oath are paramount.

A Shield Maiden’s prime requisites are strength or constitution; it is the player’s choice at character creation.  Strength influences her combat effectiveness, while constitution enhances her endurance and ability to withstand punishment.  A Shield Maiden must have at least a 14 in her prime requisite.  A Shield Maiden with a strength or constitution of 16-17 gains +5% to earned experience points; a score of 18 gains 10%.  A Shield Maiden fights and saves as a fighter.  She may use all weapons, armor and shields.

Special abilities

Shield Brace (Level 1): When a Shield Maiden wields a shield, she gains a +1 bonus to her Armor Class against missile attacks and when directly targeted by a single melee attack. This represents her expert positioning and use of the shield for maximum defense. This bonus is in addition to the shield’s normal AC bonus. At Level 10, this bonus increases to +2.

Battle Cry (Level 1): Once per day, a Shield Maiden can let out a mighty battle cry as a free action (can be done during her movement or attack). All allies (including herself) within 30 feet who can hear her gain a +1 bonus to their next attack roll or saving throw within the next round. This ability can be used more often at higher levels (see table).

Protector’s Stance (Level 3): Once per day, as an action, a Shield Maiden can designate one adjacent ally (within 5 feet) as her charge. For the next 1d4 rounds, if an attack would hit her designated charge, and the Shield Maiden has her shield ready, she can choose to use her reaction to interpose her shield. The attack then targets the Shield Maiden instead (using her AC). She must be able to logically interpose her shield (e.g., not surprised, not grappled, attack visible). This ability can be used more often at higher levels.

Steadfast Resolve (Level 5): The Shield Maiden gains a +2 bonus to all saving throws against fear effects (magical or otherwise) and against spells or abilities that would charm, magically compel, or otherwise directly control her mind. Her indomitable spirit makes her difficult to sway.

Unyielding Defense (Level 8): When a Shield Maiden is reduced to 0 hit points but not killed outright (i.e., her HP is 0 but not less than -10), she can choose to remain conscious and active for one additional round, continuing to fight, move, or defend her allies. After this round, she falls unconscious and begins dying as normal. This ability can be used once per day.

Fearless Leader (Level 9): All allies within 30 feet of the Shield Maiden gain a +1 bonus to all morale checks. Furthermore, once per day, as an action, she can spend an entire round (no other actions) to rally up to 3d6 demoralized or fleeing allies within 60 feet who can hear her. They make a morale check with a +2 bonus; if successful, they immediately cease fleeing and rejoin the fight.

Stronghold and Followers (Level 13): Upon reaching 13th level, a Shield Maiden may establish a stronghold, typically a fort, a hall, or a defensible position. This stronghold will attract a number of loyal followers (as per standard Basic Fantasy RPG rules for a fighter).
